According to the San Jose Mercury, the San Francisco Giants top five prospects will all be on the opening day roster of the club’s High-A affiliate in San Jose. That’s great news for baseball fans in California’s Central Valley, but it’s a little disappointing to fans of the Connecticut Defenders and the Eastern League.
Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Angel Villalona, Tim Alderson, and Nick Noonan were ranked one through five the Baseball America’s list of the Giants top prospects in 2009. The publication and other sources had predicted that Bumgarner, Posey and Alderson would begin the year with the Eastern League’s Connecticut Defenders. However, the Giants FO is indicating that all five will begin the year in San Jose.
There’s no word on how long they will stay on the Left Coast, but the move appears to be an attempt to avoid injuries during the chilly early spring days in Norwich, Connecticut and other Eastern League towns.
